Periodontics focuses on the supporting structures of a person’s teeth including the gums and mouth bones. Periodontitis, or gum disease, occurs when gums become irritated due to toxins and plaque. As periodontitis progresses, gums will retract from the teeth, resulting in empty spaces known as periodontal pockets. These pockets become filled with tartar, bacteria and plaque, and the condition can spread throughout the mouth including the jawbone and the connective tissues of teeth, ultimately causing tooth loss.

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is an effective non-surgical treatment for periodontitis. We use specialized dental tools to access deep spaces between teeth to remove plaque and tartar. Once that is complete, we will smooth out any rough spots on root surfaces in order to prevent future accumulations. This treatment is highly effective in stopping periodontitis and helping the gums heal.

Dental Crown Lengthening

When periodontitis occurs, the oral tissue becomes swollen and inflamed. This can cause an unattractive, “gummy” smile. Dental crown fixes this issue by removing excess gum tissue, exposing more of the natural teeth. This procedure can also be used to even out an irregular gum line.
